I have been amazed recently by the power of one shared idea among a multitude. Prof. Burton cited a book by Jeff Howe that I'll be picking up later this week. This video is one of several that Jeff Howe has presented about crowdsourcing.
Crowdsourcing breaks the traditional economic trends.
Quick experience. I participated in a research initiative by HHMI. As a freshman, I isolated a virus, characterized the virus and annotated the genome of the virus. It was a lot of work, but I got to learn how to do all of it. HHMI didn't pay me work; it just let me learn with its resources. In return, foundational research was completed and real researchers can use the findings to make more meaningful discoveries. HHMI funded about 20 schools throughout the USA to do this. That's quite a crowd of no-name researchers.
Brian I really liked this video. Thanks for posting it. I never really understood how crowd-sourcing was defined.
ReplyDeleteOh and nice job embedding the video. I just tried to do that on my too. It's harder than it looks!!
